Can the technologies you’re considering pass this test suggested by innovation-diffusion theorist Everett Rogers?
- Relative advantage: Is the innovation better than the status quo? Better than competing alternatives? Is it compelling enough to get users to switch, given the expectations about how others will behave?
- Compatibility: How well does the innovation complement other products your users have? Is it interoperable?
- Simplicity: How simple is it to explain the benefits? How many connections have to be realized to distribute it to users?
- Trialability: Can you try out the innovation so that potential adopters can see it work before they decide whether to adopt it?
- Observability: Are the innovation¹s benefits in the line of sight of future adopters? Can they observe the benefits enjoyed by early adopters? Are the next players connected to these early adopters in ways that make it easy to learn about the innovation?
